“The project requires a very special profile with technical, architectural, urban planning and programming skills”

Urban planning and technology go hand in hand in this digital project for the creation of a geographic information system (GIS) for Barcelona and its metropolitan area that is modern, up to date and accessible to everyone. The project culminates in a new BCN urban information map, the page used for urban planning consultations in the municipality of Barcelona. We spoke to Carles Cabellos, director of the Technical Office of OUA & Gamma.

What is a GIS?
A system for collecting, managing and analysing geographic information data about a place. A GIS integrates many types of data and organises them into layers of information through visualisations, using 3D maps and scenarios that determine the spatial location of city buildings and associated urban planning data.

What does the assignment consist of?
Barcelona City Council asked us to design and implement a new urban information system, uploading and transcription of the city’s urban planning, which also incorporates the metropolitan area database.

What were the challenges involved in developing this system?
The project requires a very special profile with technical, architectural, urban planning and programming knowledge. The adaptation of two different graphic and data models – those of the city council and those of the metropolitan area – and their unification under the same criteria and topographic language was a two-year job. All this required the review of more than 2,000 documents and files that had to be redrawn on the plan and re-systematised in terms of data.

What is the differential value of the new site?
The site receives between 40,000 and 50,000 visits per month from technicians, professionals and citizens. We had to put a lot of emphasis on improving both the graphic representation and the functionality and the user experience.
